Benjamin Gumpert

Head Instructor

Ben Gumpert is interested in the space between knowing something and being able to do it.

For more than twenty years, he has worked inside disciplines where that distinction becomes visible quickly: special operations, military instruction, combatives, shooting, human performance, climbing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Sayoc Kali.

Across those environments, the same problem continued to appear.

People collect answers.

Techniques. Drills. Qualifications. Standards. Systems.

But possession of an answer does not guarantee understanding, and success does not necessarily prove that the answer was correct.

Reflection grew from that problem.

Ben's instruction is built around fundamentals, principles, resistance, observation, and consequence. Students are not trained to reproduce his solutions. They are placed in conditions that require them to recognize the problem, test what they believe, and develop answers they can actually own.

The objective is not to produce miniature versions of the instructor.

It is to develop practitioners who can eventually see farther than he can.

Ben is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Professor Michael Donvito and remains a student across multiple disciplines.

The answer matters less if you never understood the question.

“Under stress you will not default to my experience, you must have your own.”
